The kitchen is an important area to consider when it comes to lighting. Due to the varied uses of the kitchen, it can be a little difficult to light but Asco Lights offers a wide range of solutions to ensure that the kitchen is lit as effectively and efficiently as possible, using a variety of products of all shapes and sizes to suit your look and style. The kitchen is a key area in a home, with this in mind, the lighting in this area has to be done correctly to avoid any dull areas where adequate task lighting is required. By taking into account the correct lighting principles your kitchen lighting will illuminate your space in a style that suits you and can considerably enhance the feel of the space.
The kitchen is a room for functionality and is used throughout the day. When designing your lighting scheme, consider the tasks you may undertake in your kitchen. Whether preparing dinner or working at a kitchen island the right lighting in the right places can really help. You’ll want lights over worktops and important task areas. For example, if you’re planning a kitchen diner, you don’t want the dining table where there isn’t going to be any light. A good level of background kitchen lighting is key, which in modern kitchens is achieved by using downlights. It is essential not to cast downlights onto the floors which leaves the worktops in darkness. The downlights should be used under cabinets so that worktops have a soft light reflecting off them. High quality LED downlights such as the Orluna Camber Adjustable Downlight would be a great choice due to its anti-glare technology and varied beam angle, making it a great choice for over kitchen worktops.
Including multiple layers of light will give you a kitchen that is functional and atmospheric. Task lighting is purely practical and should be designed to allow you to prep and cook safely. This may include ceiling downlights or under cabinet lighting. Accent lighting is used to highlight or softly light elements of the kitchen. LED strips under breakfast bars, beneath ‘floating’ kitchen islands, over wall units or illuminating shelves within cabinets can provide a great source of accent lighting. Ambient lighting or in other words, general background light, can be provided by wall and table lights, but also by your main task lighting if it’s controlled by dimmer switches. Coving lighting is a great source of indirect lighting for kitchens. Indirect LED lighting elements really create the atmosphere in a space. Indirect lighting illuminates spaces with specially designed uplighter coving to create a soft and relaxing ambience by filling in shadows with soothing light. Unlike direct lighting such as strip or pendant lights, indirect lighting is not visible. It offers a much more even distribution of light as the rays are reflected off the ceiling, wall or floor from within the coving. Whether you’re looking for mood lighting or you want to help a smaller space feel more expansive, coving lighting is a hugely effective way to enhance the architecture of any modern or traditional property.
