Insight into Lighting Design

Light is all around us. Everywhere we look we see light. Light is unique to the moment in which we’re living and it creates moods; reflecting and changing how we feel. Light plays a crucial part in illuminating our homes and our lives and it is unique in each room of our environment.

Lighting can be Evocative, Healing, Relaxing, Romantic or Uplifting

It transforms everything from an object to a room, a garden… to an entire building. Light persuades and enhances our emotions. Light floods our everyday existence and without it the world would be a very different place.

Light is the opportunity to transform a blank canvas. So why not use lighting design in the same way that artists use paint. It is, after all, an art form.

I believe lighting design should enhance our world with sensory stimulation and aesthetic

One of the UK’s Leading Lighting Design Consultants

Thanks to many years of industry experience I have worked with a number of high profile clients. From luxury mansions and multi-million pound refurbishments, to smaller private builds and one-room design concepts.

Getting lighting right is a craft. That’s why I’m an artist and I enjoy being an expert at what I do.

Producing a lighting design scheme takes time, consideration, passion and energy – regardless of project type or budget. It’s easy to purchase off-the-shelf solutions, but they don’t compare to the polished, professional, and truly luxurious finish of a professional lighting design scheme. Off-the-shelf lighting solutions provide functional light. Whereas a professional lighting design scheme creates drama, style, sensuality and visual appeal.

Lighting design offers total versatility

I believe in designing lighting concepts which evoke interest, mystery and glamour. By illuminating areas and objects of interest, depth and intensity can be created within a room.

Why just ‘do’ lighting when you can layer light by illuminating ornaments or heirlooms, paintings or portraits with sensational feature lighting.

Add to that ambient lighting, which is a well-considered mix of ceiling, table, wall or down lights, and some thoughtfully positioned task lighting, such as reading lamps or under cabinet spot lights, and the foundation of a breathtaking lighting design scheme can be seen.

Interior Design needs Lighting design

Exquisitely considered interiors need creative lighting design schemes in order to accent, highlight and illuminate key aspects within each room. Interior design, architecture and lighting design go hand-in-hand. Lighting sets style with its decorative and functional impact. You can use lighting to create silhouettes and profiles And it can be classic, contemporary, vintage, or chic – and also serious and sensual, or playful and fun. Lighting design can demonstrate your personal creativity and flair when striking colours and specialist materials are chosen.

Lighting design makes your home a retreat by responding to your changing needs and requirements. There’s no better feeling than coming home after a long day, closing the door on life, and escaping to your very own sanctuary.

And what better way to transform your life than with a truly innovative and energy-efficient lighting design scheme.

Question and Answers

As one of the UK’s leading residential lighting design consultants, I am often asked interesting and important questions. So I thought I would use this video to share a few with you. Regardless of the size, scale and budget of any project, the same level of attention, energy and talent applies

Why is lighting design so crucial to the ambience of a room?

Great lighting design offers you the opportunity to totally transform a room, as well as to completely alter its ambience and its feel at different times of day.

Lighting can have an overwhelming effect on our emotions. The right kind of lighting can make someone feel happy, relaxed, or sleepy, even romantic and glamorous Great lighting creates makes a home a wonderful place to be creating cosiness, intimacy and the feeling of luxury.

Lighting is so versatile and adaptable…I enjoy creating zoned lighting design schemes that offer function and form in the kitchen area, for example, intimacy and glamour in the dining area, and then a cosy retreat through in the lounge. Get your lighting right and you’ll reap the rewards by enjoying the perfect ambience for years to come.

What does the lighting design process entail?

I start by considering my clients’ profile: Are they young professionals, is it a family home…It’s critical I have an understanding their needs from the outset.

Next I match my clients with their style of home in order to understand their taste. Is it classic, modern, uber-chic, or vintage? I also make a note of the proposed furniture layout, as well as areas that will house art, ornaments or heirlooms, and the location of paintings, pictures and portraits.

Colour is a major factor, not just the scheme but also how natural light effects the room as well as it’s floor and wall textures.

What are my clients’ emotional needs and requirements? What do they want to achieve (from the lighting design scheme). Home inspires a whole host of emotions from safety and solitude, to a haven of rest and relaxation so all this needs to be taken into consideration.

What does layering light mean?

Well, imagine taking a blank canvas and then applying a base coat like the flooring and wall coverings. Add personal touches and interesting detail such as pictures, ornaments and candles then finally select your favourite aspects of the room. The end result creates intrigue, depth and emotion for the perfect room.

To layer light effectively you need to start with the ceiling light, which could be anything from a glamorous chandelier to a whole array of spot lights.

Next, highlight your favourite picture or painting with some subtle wall lights.

Now it’s time to add accents, such as a single and strategically placed reading lamp, or some (sensational) LEDs or spot lights which illuminate a beautiful piece of art. The choice is yours and ayering light can produce some phenomenal results

When should you consider creating the lighting design scheme?

As soon as you can…!!

Many people make the mistake of leaving lighting design decisions until the very last minute in the build or redesign process. (which can be a costly mistake if you want to create ‘the perfect room’.)

(Sadly, this often means that after having spent a lot of money on impressive fixtures and fittings, they fail to illuminate them correctly and really don’t do their hard work justice.)

My advice is that you consider every aspect of the lighting design scheme at the earliest possible stage. Not only will it save time, money and hassle but your perfect ideas will come to fruition and your best possible lighting solution will become a reality.
